Another DIY Bass Project; Fretless Conversion

Another bass project today with the talented Braden Yates, a guitar and bass student. He’s a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and recording student. His main project is “The Sun In The Sea”. We defretted his Toby 4. I talked him through how to make some of the tools needed for this with a grinder, then we defretted the bass. I pulled the first few to show him, and then he worked on his own. He wanted the new fret lines to match the body color, so I blended a batch of DAP with some stain while he continued working. He liked the strings on my DIY fretless, so we put a set of GHS Stainless Steel Precision Flatwounds on. I did a setup (as he likes to tap and it’s definitely part of his vocabulary); there much happiness on this rainy day. The end result; the bass sounded vocal, expressive, loud, and warm. Fast action, easy to tap, nice fretless voice.

You can hear Braden in action on this track, titled “Jar”. He wrote and did all the work on this track…guitar parts, bass parts, recording, mixing, mastering, everything. Check it out.
