DIY Jazz Bass in Platane

My DIY fretless is on walkabout making friends.

The Flying V bass rebuild is in the home stretch.

Wiring work on the Steampunk headless is underway.

And THEN…one of my very, very talented bass students comes in with this badass DIY Jazz bass. Stats; Platane wood with a boiled linseed oil finish, Wilkinson jazz pups, Wilkinson tuners, neck, and bridge were found on eBay. This bass has a surprising amount of mojo and growl with little body weight. No surprise, given the builder is a double bassist and redonc electric bassist. Might have to experiment with these pups and that wood.

Recap of the stats on my DIY fretless for those who may be curious; Warmoth neck (Indian rosewood/birds eye maple/scalloped brass nut), burl Brazilian walnut top on alder body, wet sanded tung oil finish, Nordstrand Big J Blades in clean and clear winding. Bridge and control plate were eBay finds.

Update: June 2018 – Andy dropped a gorgeous wood pickguard on the bass, complete with a knothole for some great character. I spent part of the weekend shielding and making some mods on this bass to get the electronics in good order.
