Farther To Fall

I wanted to try something completely different than I usually do on a bass….more like a jangly “singer-songwriter coffeehouse” feel for a change. Tapping into some “Hole Hearted” (Extreme), “Rusty Old American Dream” (David Wilcox), and even the Black Crowes for inspiration. Tuning (low to high) – C# G# C# G#

Farther to Fall –

We both fell into the darkness of despair and random hatred
Lovelessness had made this place
And I thought that we were climbing, securing our friendship
Seeking a brighter place
But the rope broke, and we fell down
And I got up, but you were run down
In a flash of some great hurting, you just gave up your nobility
I shook my head so sadly; why do you insist on suffering?

I guess we’ve both got farther to fall.
I guess we’ve both got farther to fall.
Sadly enough, ‘cos I don’t want to see it.
We’ve both got farther to fall.

I grabbed your hand and held on, intending to climb us to safety
But you pushed me away, you made it clear that I was hardly worthy
Of neither your contempt nor as a confidante
I saw your dark will burning, defiant in those storm-swept eyes
I shook my head so sadly; why do you inflict such suffering?

I guess you’ve just got farther to fall.
I guess you’ve just got farther to fall.
Sadly enough, it’s yourself you’re deceiving
I guess you’ve just got farther to fall.

You began these angry accusations, asking why do I care at all?
How dare I ease your hatred; how dare that I tried at all?
A broken heart lies bleeding as you willfully let go.
It’s hard watching your best friend fall, but it’s harder when you don’t really know
Why he gave up, and he looked down
Why he’s bitter, and he let you down
Where he lost love, why he lost hope
Why he didn’t try, why he couldn’t cope
I shook my head so sadly, my best friend’s lost his humanity

I guess he’s just got farther to fall
I guess you’ve just got farther to fall.
Though I still love you, I don’t want to see it
And though I still miss you, I just can’t believe it
I guess you’ve just got farther to fall
I guess you’ve just got farther to fall
